Hiking and guided tours Upper Fraser River

Hiking is one of the best ways to really see the Esketemc native lands and enjoy its full majesty. The varied terrain is suitable for short relaxed hikes and the surrounding foothills are great for those that wish for something a little more strenuous.

The large amounts of wildlife in the area makes it an ideal to observe them. In particular, the lake is a resting/feeding point for migrating American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) and other water fowl. American White Pelicans are on the British Columbia Red List and have been legally designated as an Endangered Species in British Columbia. British Columbia has only one nesting colony of American White Pelicans, which is located at Stum Lake, 70 kilometres west of Williams Lake.

To get the best view of the animals, for $10/hour an Esketemc guide will accompany you on your hikes, pointing out animal habitats and areas of significance.

The vegetation is mainly sage brush and grasslands, with pine forests and pastures on the tops of the hills. Most of the timber is Interior Dry Belt Douglas fir, within Mule Deer Winter Ranges.

The Esketemc land is located adjacent to the Alkali Lake Ranch and the Springhouse Ranch where much of the land has been cleared for cattle grazing and range use. This provides an interesting contrast in the use of the lands.
