Esk'et is located in a valley bounded by low rolling hills. The countryside is wide and open with grassland plateaus and is perfect for exploring on horseback.
Self-guided trails are available for tourists for tourists to venture out on
their own, however the best experience is to go out with an experienced Esk'et
escort who can guide you through the lands pointing out historically and culturally
significant areas as well as answer any questions you may have about the land
or the people. All trails are marked with signs in Secwepemc and English that
point out areas of interest and of areas of heritage/cultural significance.
Whether you have never ridden a horse before or are an experienced rider who doesn't mind a frisky horse, there are horses to match all levels of experience. The Esk'et guides are careful to match the correct horse with the level of experience of the rider for the best trail riding experience. If this is your first time on a horse, additionally there is a small riding ring where riders can get to know their horse before heading out on the open trail.
There are so many trails that it would be impossible to see them all in a single visit. There are day-long rides ranging from 4 hours to 6 hours and overnight trips, ranging from one to several nights. Outhouse facilities are always available for overnight trips.
In particular, we recommend the three day/two night trip that circles around the village and explores the countryside. The first night is spent camping under the stars along the banks of the Fraser River while the second night is spent high up in the meadows where there are cabins and outhouses.
We can accommodate single riders up to groups of 6 - 7 people.
All gear will be provided by the trail riding organization at Esk'et. Visitors should only bring proper riding attire (i.e. jeans, cowboy boots or other boots/hiking shoes), sunscreen, bug spray, and any other personal items. Sleeping bags, tents, food and drink will be provided, however, if visitors don't wish to provide their own.
The two chief guides are Joe Paul and Joan Rosette. They are experienced Esketemc riders and have much experience in escorted groups through the lands.
Joe and Joan are both very knowledgeable about the surrounding countryside and Esketemc heritage. They are personable and will point out things of interest and are happy to answer any questions.
